What is General Dentistry?
We encourage all our patients to visit us for a check-up (our Healthy Mouth review) twice a year. This gives us the chance to conduct an oral cancer screening and identify any decay early enough to prevent any significant damage. It may be that we just need to advise you how to brush correctly or identify areas that are being missed by your tooth brush.
As dentists we believe prevention is always better than cure and will always encourage and help you to look after your teeth, so you don’t develop tooth decay in the first place. If we do identify a problem then we will use the best technique to restore your tooth. Read about the different types of treatment below or call us to discuss a particular procedure.
If you are pregnant we recommend that you come to the practice for a thorough check up so we can help you to have a healthy and happy pregnancy. That’s because hormone changes during pregnancy can affect your oral health and many pregnant women notice that their gums are red, inflamed and sometimes bleed when they brush their teeth.
General Dentistry Treatments

If you do have decay and need a filling then we recommend white fillings as a good solution that is both aesthetic and functional. To improve the cosmetic look of your smile have your metal-coloured fillings replaced with tooth-coloured or ‘white’ fillings.
Crowns & Bridges
A crown is a type of dental restoration used to fix teeth that have been broken, weakened by decay or have a very large filling. The crown fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth.
Root Canal Therapy
Root canal treatment (also called Endodontics) is needed when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected through tooth decay or damaged by an injury to your mouth. The treatment overall should feel no different to having an ordinary filling placed.
We'll check your bite, often referred to as TMJ disorder, which can cause some people to clench the jaw and grind their teeth at night. This can lead to facial pain, headaches, discomfort and clicking when biting or chewing, migraines as well as neck and shoulder pain, even back pain.
Extractions / Oral Surgery
If you have advanced tooth decay or an impacted wisdom tooth, you may require oral surgery to have them safely extracted. Dentists have the right equipment and sterile environment in which to perform this type of procedure with the utmost care and your recovery can be fairly quick.
Inlays & Onlays
Inlays and onlays are two types of restorations for a cavity in your tooth that is too big to be filled. An inlay is a small filling that fits into the biting surface of a tooth while an onlay covers a larger area of the tooth and is better suited to bigger cavities. Made from tooth-coloured porcelain and gives the restored tooth a more natural look, which many patients prefer.
Mouth Cancer Screening
Studies show that mouth cancer is on the increase and that early detection dramatically improves the chances of recovery. The screening involves a thorough examination of your whole mouth, including the use of a handheld scanning device that is used to examine any lumps or lesions that you might have.
